Troubleshooting the Universal Kit

Warning: Please be aware that opening the RMV (Reservoir Metering Valve), or tampering with it in any way will violate the warranty agreement and is likely to result in further damage to the unit.

Difficulty in priming the system
The delivery tube is draining when bike is standing
The system continues to deliver oil when the engine is off
The internal spring has become weakened

The system will not deliver oil
The system delivers excess oil
The system delivers oil but it is slow
Oil is flowing back up delivery tube when engine is started

Difficulty in priming the system.
Ensure that the adjuster knob is turned fully clockwise to "PRIME" setting - NB: do not force past "PRIME" marking on top or reservoir. Ensure the delivery pipe hasn't become crushed at any point, i.e. at cable ties; tool kit; seat.
Check the black injector at sprocket hasn't become blocked - clear with needle. [Back]

The delivery tube is draining when bike is standing.FULL LENGTH DRAINS: Check the delivery tube for loose connection at bottom of RMV - remake connection. PARTIAL DRAIN/AIR BUBBLES: Check at start of draining point for small hole/split in tube - fit mushroomed connector (part 3b) at break point. [Back]

The system continues to deliver oil when the engine is off.
Check breather for blockage. This can create a vacuum within the RMV that will hold the valve open. To check - disconnect the breather and run system. Attempt to clear breather by blowing slowly through, or contact Scottoilers for replacement breather (part 9). NB - do not run the system without the breather for any length of time, as the oil can become contaminated with dirt.

The internal 'O' ring has become contaminated with dirt and is not re-seating - attempt to clear by pumping bottle repeatedly when re-priming the system. This may dislodge dirt on the 'O' ring seal inside the reservoir. [Back]

The internal spring has become weakened.
Contact Scottoiler, quoting warranty reference and the code etched on RMV under the filler plug. [Back]

The system will not deliver oil.Check Delivery pipe: Check for any air bubbles in clear delivery tube - re-prime to clear. Ensure pipe hasn't become crushed or split at any point, i.e. at cable ties; tool kit; seat.

Check the injector at sprocket hasn't become blocked - clear with needle.

Check Vacuum Connection: Turn the adjuster knob to "Prime" and switch engine on - If valve in oiler lifts the vacuum connection is OK. If the valve does not lift - check the black nylon pipe and damper elbow for breaks/splits, which could cause loss of vacuum.

If initial installation - check that oiler is connected to a vacuum line by removing pipe, switching engine on and checking with finger for suction.

Check Breather - Remove from side of RMV, switch engine on and attempt to run system. If it delivers oil without breather - the breather is blocked. Attempt to clear by blowing slowly through, or contact Scottoiler for replacement (part 9).

Check for blockage at syphon inside the RMV - Disconnect the delivery tube from the RMV. The pipe should drain completely. If it doesn't there could be a blockage at the black injector at the sprocket. Clear it with a needle, gravity will drain the pipe. Attempt to clear by pumping bottle repeatedly as in repriming the system. This may dislodge any dirt on the needle seat. If successful re-assemble and re-prime the delivery tube. [Back]

The system delivers excess oil.
Turn the adjuster knob fully anti-clockwise to minimum. The system should not deliver more than 2 drops per minute at this setting. If it does deliver more than 2 drops - contact Scottoilers with your warranty reference and the code etched on RMV under the filler plug. [Back]

The system delivers oil but it is slow.
The RMV can be set to PRIME and will still operate normally - ie on with engine and off with engine. If oiler is 'slow' between numbers 1 and 9, continue adjusting until a delivery of 1-2 drops per minute is achieved. If the unit still doesn't flow quickly enough please continue with the following checks.

Check Delivery pipe: Check for any air bubbles in clear delivery tube - re-prime to clear. Ensure pipe hasn't become crushed or split at any point, i.e. at cable ties, tool kit or seat.

Check the injector at sprocket hasn't become partially blocked: If blocked clear with needle.

Check breather is not partially blocked: Disconnect breather and run as normal. If the flow improves the breather is partially blocked. If the flow does not improve replace breather and continue to follow troubleshooting.

Check position of RMV: The system is a gravity system, the higher the RMV the faster the flow. The RMV should be positioned 30-45cm higher than the dispenser nib at the chain.

If you have a High Capacity Reservoir it will naturally slow the flow slightly, but check that the cap in the swivel-out filling tube still has the small pin hole and that it is not blocked. If blocked clear with needle.

If you have a Lube Tube and it is placed too low it will slow the flow from the RMV. Try disconnecting the Lube Tube and running the RMV as normal. If flow rates increase without the Lube Tube attached re-site Lube Tube in a higher position and re-connect. The Lube Tube should be no more than 20cm higher or lower than the RMV.

If you have a Dual Injector it will naturally slow the flow slightly but this should not affect performance, however do check that the nibs are clear and not blocked. [Back]

Oil is flowing back up delivery tube when engine is started.
There is a fault, i.e. a split, in the internal diaphragm. Please contact Scottoilers, quoting your warranty reference and the code etched on the RMV under the filler plug. For example J16 or H11. This can also happen if the RMV has been opened and reassembled incorrectly - i.e. missing the closing spring, or not re-fitting the diaphragm onto the locating groove on the oiler top.
