At 25 years of age James Heaney will become one of the youngest people from the UK to undertake a solo circumnavigation of the world by motorcycle. The project dubbed ‘One Route’ will see James ride 20,000 miles through 13 countries. The Trip is designed to raise money and awareness for the charity War Child.
The journey started on May the 10th 2011 leaving from Cheltenham, England going into Europe, through Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia to Vladivostok where James will get a ferry over to Japan. From Tokyo he’ll fly over to San Francisco, follow Highway 1 south into Los Angeles, then along Route 66, finishing in Chicago 100 days later.
James's inspiration for the trip came after he was involved in a motorcycle accident which left him immobilized for 6-months. During this period he spent his time watching re-runs of the Long Way Round and Long Way Down. James said: “I was fearful of getting back onto a motorcycle, but I desperately wanted to. I wanted to try and face my fear head on, and so the (ridiculously ambitious) project One Route was born.”
When it came to selecting the correct bike for this journey James decided to buy a 2007 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom. This versatile dual-sport motorcycle is famous for its comfort, fuel range, engine and handling and seemed the perfect bike. To aid performance James fitted the Scottoiler vSystem and added the Lube Tube to provide him with extra oil capacity, meaning he is free to spend more time riding and enjoying the adventure.
James but will also support the charity War Child, which is a small international charity that protects children from the brutal effects of war and its consequences. They are currently working in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq and Uganda.
