Scottoiler rider conquers The Hobbit’s Tale

On Friday May the 13th 2011 at 10am, Scottoiler and Santa Cruz sponsored rider, Dave Buchanan, set off on the biggest ride of his life.

He rode from Cardiff to Caernarfon, over some of the toughest countryside and trail centre terrain in the UK, before turning around and riding home to Cardiff. “The Hobbit’s Tale”, as it is known, has been validated by The Guinness World Records(tm) as “The Greatest Distance Achieved on a Mountain Bike in 48 hours.”

The purpose of this ride is to raise money for charity. Due to his own medical history, Clic Sargent is the charity of choice for Dave and the race that got him into the world of 24 Solo riding, Clic24 is the focal point for any funds that the effort raises.

After years of planning and countless hours of forgiveness from his partner, Joanne, "The Hobbit's Tale" has finally been completed. Even with a solid headwind and some bad weather, Dave made it to the turnaround point before the 24hr point. This meant that he only had another 224miles and 11178m of climbing to ride home. Dave felt really fresh so had a quick seat in the back of the car drank some fluid and got out of the wind for a bit.

However, the weather was even worse on the way back. Wet firetrack reduced his average speed by 2km/hr and at times they had over an inch of water on them.

After the race Dave said “I'm kind of tired, but happy.” In decent weather, he is confident of completing the ride in less than 48 hours, as the southward route is easier by a little bit. He now starts the task of collating the information required by the authorities at The Guinness World Records(tm).

Dave has the Scottoiler Cycle Oiler installed on his bike, which you can see positioned just above the chainset in the picture below.
